Waste Not Want Not 123

The measure of wellbeing in society may take into consideration the availability of provisions for sustenance, food, shelter, health, etc. The freedom to achieve well-being is a matter of what people can do and be, and thus the kind of life they are effectively able to lead. The capability approach pioneered by Amartya Sen rests on (1) the assessment of individual well-being; (2) the evaluation and assessment of social arrangements; and (3) the design of policies and proposals about social change in society. Extensive public discussion sharing values and resolve in a transparent democratic manner addressing inheritance of past transgressions at global and local levels may be the start of progress towards the attainment of wellbeing at a societal level. Implementation of policies at a local level may be piloted and measured for effectiveness and checked for avoidance of arbitrariness.

About the Artist

Having begun my journey in the arts from age four, misdiagnosed with diphtheria and confined to a hospital bed in a remote small town in Bihar, India, it was my dream to make art.  After losing my father in my teens, I worked in Public Relations with Indian Railways to support my family.

I embraced fine arts as a second lease on life here in the US far from my birth city of Kolkata in India.  Ever since, my works have shown at the Newark Museum (NJ), The Royal Scottish Academy, Tate (UK) Mumbai Museum (India) Contemporary Art Museum S. Korea, Torpedo Art Factory, Monmouth Museum (NJ) Haggin Museum (CA), Lalit Kala Academy (India), Feminist Art Project, Goggleworks, Prince Street Gallery, Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, and National Liberty Museum, Philadelphia.  A founder member of SIPMA Contemporary, I curated a number of exhibits with an emphasis on inter-disciplinary art.  I collaborated in experimental dance/art at Swarthmore College and performance art at the Soho 20 gallery, NYC.
